This page is mostly concerned with in trade robots. Let us remind you that these kind of robots appeared very recently on the market. From Aïbo, the robot, to the famous Furby, they're all here. In order to try and organize this constantly evolutive world, we have divided the in trade robots in three categories: the animats are robots who look like or are supposed to look like real animals; the droids are those resembling human beings; and finally, the machines, which can't be categorized. If you want to learn how these tiny creatures work, we would advise that you go take some AI classes. Thus you'll be able to answer the very trendy question: but how to robots work? Wanna show off in front of your friends? You're in the right spot!

AIRAT2 is one the most advanced "maze-explorer" robots actually on the market. The robot uses 6 pairs of infrared diodes to know its whereabouts. Built around an 8051 micro-controler, the robot comes with its complete C source programs. Movements are fed by 2 H546 stepper engines. You can entirely re-program the robot via an RS232 connection. To do so, you'll need to download the 8051 micro-controler's own compiler on the net. This high-quality, particularly well-finished robot will give you the opportunity to know more about mobile robotics, as well as enter maze-finding competitions. Actually, it's the most wanted platform for these kind of competitions in Asia. Basic programs find the way out of mazes and optimize pathfinding after several explorations of the environment, in order to eventually find the best solution, taking sharp turns at maximal speed and automatically. The robot comes with programs, a detailed description, a simulator to test your programs and all the necessary connections. The robot is in kit-form and costs around $1000 at Lextronic or Microrobot.

Robotics Design is in Montreal. This company has become a specialist in developing robots able to evolve in extreme environments and known as the ANAT (Articulated Nimble Adaptable Trunk) family. One of the most famous is undoubtedly the ANAT Walker, one the robots competing to explore Mars. This robot can evolve on highly uneven ground without any human intervention. Copying the snake, it changes its body's shape to follow the ground round. The mechanics is great but no information on the intelligence is available on the website. Today, the ANAT Walker is used to explore hostile environments but they sure hope to take off towards the stars one of these days.

Husqvarna sells a completely autonomous lawnmower. It can recharge on its own through its power station, avoid obstacles, and even change the size of the mowing cut according to the lawn's need. The work area is limited by cables that are put on the ground. A series of cables allows the mower to find the way back to the power station if needed. This "robot" costs around U.S.$1715. A list of retailers is available on Husqvarna's website.

Artificial Intelligence, the next Spielberg movie, is actually an old Kubrick's movie project. The story: 2050, human beings will only be allowed to have a single child... unless they adopt a robot-child! In complete secret, Dreamworks company launched a huge number of websites inspired from the movie's universe: something like thirty - or more - websites that take the websurfer 50 years forward in the future. But unfortunately, these websites have been opened without advertisement and only the websurfer's curiosity led to discover their existence! From a website to another, you're going deeper into this world: anti-droids propaganda, intelligent homes builder, human beings/robots equal rights fight, an FBI department specialized in catching rebel androids, a pro-robots sect... Each website - or at least those which have been discovered - are listed on the "Ain't it Cool" website that led the investigation.
